Genius Hour Research

This week, I began research for my Genius Hour project. I learned what supplies I will need for this project, and found several sources that will be able to help me learn how to knit a pair of mittens.

I learned that there are many different ways to knit mittens, not just one way. I learned of many different stitches, such as the knit stitch, the stockinette stitch, the garter stitch, the seed stitch, the linen stitch, the purl stitch, and many more. Many of these stitches can be used to create mittens, using different knitting patterns. I also learned that you can create visual patterns in the mittens, such as cable knits, stripes, diamonds, or even flowers with different stitches, different colours, or a combination of different stitches and colours.

I found online sources that were both text and video, and I discovered that video instruction will be the best way to learn how to knit mittens online, as it is more visual and I can see exactly what to do, and how to manipulate the knitting needles. Describing the intricacies of knitting through words can be difficult, and visual aids to accompany the written instruction help me understand the process better.

Before my next Genius Hour, I will need to purchase the supplies needed to create a pair of knitted mittens, so I can begin practicing new stitches, and trying the different methods to knit mittens that I found through my research.

Once I have tried a few of these methods, I will need to decide which is best for me to attempt as a beginner. In future, I may decide to develop my skills even further and try some of the other stitches and patterns I have learned about.

If I have any questions, I will be able to find the answers in knitting guide books, online articles, or video tutorials online. Further, I can always replay a part of a video to retrace a step until I become familiar with it or comprehend the concept.

I look forward to getting the supplies needed to start this project, so I can begin knitting! 😊
