More Genius Hour Research: Starting to Knit

For my Genius Hour this week, I researched how to "cast off" or "bind off." This is how you finish off the edge of a knitted piece, so the yarn does not unravel. This is a crucial step, which will ensure my knitting project does not fall apart.

To learn how to "cast off", I found instructional videos to be extremely helpful so I could see the movements of the yarn and the needles, and pause and rewind to re-watch sections as many times as I needed. I would follow along with the videos, and pause them when I needed time to catch up. I found watching multiple videos to be helpful, because each video provided a new perspective.

I practiced "casting on", learned last week, knitting the rectangles that will be used to form the mittens,  and "binding off" for two hours this week. It took me a while to get the hang of "casting on" and "binding off." At first, it felt very awkward, but I became more comfortable as I watched more instructional videos from various perspectives, and continued to practice my own stitches. Practice makes perfect, as they say!

Next week, I will need to learn how to attach the rectangles of yarn, to form the knitted rectangles into mittens. This, I will be able to learn from more instructional videos online.

I look forward to continuing to practice my stitches, "casting on" and "casting off" this week, and I look forward to beginning to form the pieces I have created into mittens next week. 😊
