Closing Thoughts: Genius Hour

This week, I learned how to attach the rectangles of yarn, to form the rectangles I had knitted into mittens - the final step!

Just as with the prior steps I took to learn how to knit mittens, I found instructional videos to be extremely helpful. Seeing the movements you need to make with your hands and the needle to attach the pieces together was extremely helpful. With video, I could pause, re-wind, and re-watch sections for as long and as often as I needed to in order to learn the skill.

Although I had lots of practice with the general knit stitches and have grown quite familiar with how to do these, I still struggle with casting on and binding off, because you don't need to use these skills as often when knitting a piece.

In the future, I would like to practice these skills more, so I can become more familiar with them, and they become as easy as the general knit stitches are for me now.

Reflecting on my progress, I am proud of how far I have come in developing my knitting skills. At first, when I would try something new that I was researching, I would become easily frustrated if I didn't understand the instructions or couldn't do it. This project has taught me that patience and perseverance are very important in learning a new skill, and are essential in order to progress in that skill.

I was also impressed with how determined I was to carry on in my research and skill development, despite my initial frustration. Because I was interested in the subject matter I was learning, I was more motivated and did not mind spending the time it took to learn and progress.

In my research, I found that there is more than one way to create a pair of knitted mittens. In the future, I would like to learn some of the other methods that are used to create a pair of knitted mittens. I was also surprised to discover how many different stitches there are in knitting. I would like to learn how to do more of these stitches, especially the more elaborate ones, so I can create knitted pieces with different textures and colours. Of course, I would also like to learn how to knit a touque, to complete my winter ensemble. 😉

I look forward to continuing to develop my skills in knitting, and creating many more beautiful pieces with the skills I've acquired in completing this project. 😊

As a future educator, I also look forward to sharing the Genius Hour experience with my future students so they can learn and develop new skills through researching a question they are interested in learning or are passionate about.
